One Planet Agrahood (OPA) is an emerging land-based community design framework that explores how a human settlement can actively regenerate the landscapes that support it. Inspired by the agrihood movement, One Planet Developments in Wales, and a desire to move beyond petroleum dependence, this model reconnects people with the land, each other, and the rhythms of living systems.
At its core, the idea is simple: a small number of households living closely with the land can become a stabilizing presence within a larger ecology. When homes, gardens, food production, and daily routines are thoughtfully integrated with the natural processes of soil, water, flora, and fauna, ordinary life itself becomes a regenerative act.
In this way, the household becomes a kind of ecological niche — where human care, observation, and participation help strengthen the resilience and diversity of the surrounding landscape.
OPA draws heavily from permaculture design principles and indigenous land stewardship traditions that emphasize reciprocity, humility, and long-term relationship with place.
The goal is not simply to build housing near farms, but to cultivate a way of living where people participate in the renewal of soil, water, and habitat as a natural part of everyday life.
More broadly, the OPA concept explores how small, thoughtfully designed village landscapes could contribute to larger patterns of ecological and social repair — supporting rural revitalization, watershed health, pollinator populations, and climate adaptation while providing meaningful, land-connected ways of living.
OPA is intentionally being developed as an open and evolving design framework. It begins from the recognition that creating resilient communities requires many forms of knowledge — practical experience, archaic wisdom, cultural traditions, and new ecological insights. We believe many people are already experimenting with the pieces of this future.
If you are one of them, we invite you to bring your ideas, observations, and experiences into the community conversation. Together we can create a living model for the household and village of the future.
